Electroacoustic Barn Dance: Day Two

If you aren’t aware, there is a fantastic festival happening on campus right called the Electroacoustic Barn Dance. It’s a three day music festival (October 1 – 3) held annually by UMW. Although this isn’t your average music festival, it is one specifically designed for the most innovative, and forward thinking artists in the world of experimental electronic music. Unfortunately I had to miss the first three concerts of this amazing festival due to class interference, but I plan to see all of the ones being hosted tomorrow.

The variety of compositions in the festival so far has been quite large. Pieces range from Musique Concrete, to guitar loops, to experimental electronic, to electroacoustic improvisation. Many of the artists performing are nationally renowned for their contributions to the field of experimental music. But along side these musical masterminds are also local artists, many of which come from UMW and neighboring colleges. In fact, two of my favorite pieces that I heard today were composed by current UMW students.

Overall it has been a great experience so far and I can’t wait to listen to more of this innovative and challenging music tomorrow!

Notable compositions from today’s concerts:

Flannery Collins – Song of the ITCC

Dave Watkins – Fyra

Maxwell Tfirn – Dying Stars BRing Light to a Dark Sky

Mya Payne – El Tunel

Kyong Mee Choi – To Unformed
