The Monterey Pop Festival was held in Monterey, CA in the summer of 1967 becoming the first widely publicized and attended rock music festival.  The festival is noted for hosting the first major U.S. performances of Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, and Ravi Shankar.   John Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas was the key organizer and promoter of the event.  All revenue from ticket sales was donated to charity and all the performers except for Ravi Shankar were not paid.  Shankar was paid $3,000 for his four-hour-long Sunday afternoon sitar performance.  He is accompanied by Ustad Alla Rakha on tabla.
