Releases

  • Julian Casablancas – Phrazes for the Young

That’s it until next week. Enjoy Bonfire Day and while burning things, might I suggest listening to the 1812 Overture?

*As performed by the band with the BBC Orchestra.
**I could have tortured you, but I was feeling generous.
***This clip is from the brilliant, and only available in the UK, Blackpool miniseries featuring David Tennant and David Morrissey. You can kind of hear Sandi Shaw, but that’s not really the point now is it?

Nora’s [Fill in the Blank] Radio Show – 10/28/09

News Items

  • Should record contracts have an intervention clause in case an artist or band decide to pull an Amy Winehouse? Who knows, but I would really like to see label bosses try and enforce that clause.
  • Want to know what happened to Morrissey (ever)? NME.com has you covered.
  • Kanye West to serve 50 hours of community service. Maybe it will deflate his ego a micrometer, but in all likelihood, he’ll just complain thus causing his ego to grow even larger.
  • Fall Out Boy to release a greatest hits album. God only knows why, but there you have it. I’m sure stranger things have happened.
  • The Mighty Boosh are hoping to release a film and record next year. I cross my fingers in the hopes that the album will include “Love Games.”
  • Pulp are going to play Glastonbury 2010!!! Oh no, never mind.
  • The Cribs raise money for neglected children in the Leeds/West Yorkshire area by re-releasing their cover of “Modern Way.” Can’t really say anything snarky about that now can I?
  • More crap about illegal downloading laws in the UK. I promise, no more news items about this issue, really. No more.
  • Lily Allen in talks to set up her own record label thus nullifying her previous statement that she’s quitting the music business. Next week she’ll announce that she’s going to release an album through her new label thus nullifying the statement that she’s just quitting singing. And so on and so forth.

Releases

  • Devendra Banhart – What Will We Be
  • Echo and the Bunnymen – The Fountain
  • Weezer – Raditude
  • Wolfmother – Cosmic Egg
  • Tegan and Sara – Sainthood
  • The Swell Season – Strict Joy

Well that is it until next week, when I’ll be making the play list all by myself (hopefully.) Until then have a safe Halloween, watch out for a crazy person in a pink tutu and don’t panic.

~The video for this song is directed by Sophie Muller, video director goddess. Check out her wikipedia entry for more info on her directing style and other videos she’s directed, it’s worth the time and effort.

*I’ve played this song on the show before Halloween for the past two years. I think that makes it a tradition right?
**This isn’t the full song, just further proof that I’m a crazy fan girl willing to post anything done by this band.
***I was at the performance! It was amazing. Like whoa.
****With spiders!
*****On my show I said this was the song that got me back into pop. I wasn’t lying. It was a snow day and, as they say, the rest is history. A history which I won’t burden you with. Also for some reason I kept calling this song “Mr. Bright Eyes.” I don’t know why. :shrugs:
******Another instance when I call something the wrong thing. The title of the album that this song comes from is not Welcome to the Long Walk Alone. It’s just Welcome to the Walk Alone. Again, not sure why I keep calling it the wrong thing, blame bad brain connections.
*******When I imagined what the video for this song would be like in my head, this was not it. Not at all.

Nora’s [Fill in the Blank] Radio Show – 10/21/09

News Items

  • Lady Gaga relaunches her North American tour but forgets DC. Of course.
  • On the other hand the Arctic Monkeys announce more North American tour dates and remember DC. But it’s during exams. I just can’t win.
  • Some very lucky Mancunians got to see Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand play an acoustic set this past Saturday. I, per usual, took Alex’s Twitter update literally and thought he was at an actual tea party.
  • Kings Of Leon career-spanning exhibition to open in London. I’m confused as to how they earned this, but whateves.
  • Amy Winehouse hasn’t taken drugs in a year. According to her Dad. Very reliable, I’m sure.
  • The Madness re-release their debut album, One Step Beyond. Unlike with other re-releases, this one’s old, so it’s cool.

Releases

  • Florence + The Machine – Lungs
  • Flight of the Conchords – I Told You I Was Freaky
  • Sufjan Stevens – The BQE
  • Electric Six – Kill

And that is it until next week. In the mean time, listen to some good music and don’t panic.

*Here’s some insider information for you lot. I’m going to be playing at least one track from Mika’s The Boy Who Knew Too Much every week until the end of the semester. Slowly but surely you will a learn to love Mika. Mwhahahahahaha
**About mid-way through this song I found out my GM (general manager, person who owns me) was listening. And I wasn’t playing the clean version of the song. Not a good idea.
***My sister recommended two of the tracks for this week’s show, the other being Florence + the Machine’s “Kiss with a Fist.”
****I will always love this video because towards the end there’s a great shot of Mark Ronson sitting on the drum platform with a Leeds United scarf playing the tambourine. Makes me laugh every time.

Well that’s it for this week. Next week’s show will be starting late, so prepare yourself for less insanity by listening to Mika. Or the Kaiser Chiefs or whatever causes you to go crazy. Until then, don’t panic.

*This is from the concert video Stop Making Sense which was my first introduction to the idea of a tiny, tiny man in a really big suit. Enjoy
**In this same recording session, Lily Allen pretended to be a cat. It was great.
***As you can tell, this is not the version by the Wombats. I just like messing with your heads and I like Leona Lewis’ version just as well.
****The bassist for this band was on Never Mind the Buzzcocks last week and talked a lot more than I thought he would. However he didn’t know the lyrics to his own band’s song.
*****Mwhahahahahaha.
******Turned out I had more time than I thought, so I unofficially played another song. Here’s the link to the “official” video of Mika performing “Billy Brown.”

Nora’s [Fill in the Blank] – 9/30/09

So this for this week’s show I spent great long periods of time not saying a thing. I guess you could say I let the music speak for itself (which I’m sure many of you were glad to have happen.) So, to mirror my show, this week’s entry will let the music speak for itself. 0_0
